  • Set the Valance. Place the valance up against the cleats. Attach the valance to the cleats using drywall screws. Don’t use too much pressure as you drill because this can pull away from the cleat from the cabinet.

Ways to Change a Scalloped Wood Valance Over a Window in an Older Kitchen

By Kathleen Berlew Updated January 07,

A fringed valance covers scalloped trim to create a more sophisticated look.

An above-the-sink scalloped wood valance is a common fixture in many older and vintage kitchens. But today these valances are often considered eyesores by some contemporary homeowners. If your kitchen features a scalloped wood valance, you can remove it -- or hire a carpenter to do the job for you. Your other option is to make cosmetic changes that camouflage the valance or help it harmonize with your kitchen's style.

Paint It

If the scalloped valance in your kitchen is dressed in tired maple or dark stain, it's no wonder you want to change it. The only update the valance -- and the rest of your cabinetry -- may need is a coat of paint. Choose a color that complements your kitchen's existing style. Use white, cream, yellow, blue, sage or red paint in a farmhouse- or cottage-style kitchen. The scalloped valance becomes a bright, fresh architectural detail that adds charm, not age. In a contemporary kitchen, use black, mocha or charcoal gray paint to make the scalloped valance blend with existing cabinetry. If you'd like to highlight the valance rather than hide it, decorate it with stenciled motifs or a hand-lettered quote.

Customize It

Although you may not have the carpentry skills to replace your scalloped valance, you can elevate its architectural appeal with a simple do-it-yourself project. To transform the valance into a piece of custom woodwork, install a piece of 3/inch plywood behind it. You can have the lumber cut to order at a home-improvement store. The piece should measure the same width as the valance and a few inches longer. Attach the plywood to the back of the valance with wood glue and screws. The scalloped valance is now one layer of a custom molding. To add more dimension, use wood glue to apply wood medallions and strips of narrow molding to the valance. A few coats of paint unifies the trims and completes the valance's custom transformation.

Cover It

Use a fabric valance to conceal your wood valance and enhance your kitchen's style. A rod-pocket valance hides the scalloped trim completely. Choose a textile and style that suits the kitchen's color scheme and decor. A gathered gingham or floral valance complements a country kitchen's airy feel. A pleated or swag valance adds elegance to a more formal kitchen. If you can sew, create a custom valance in any color or style you like. If your sewing skills are limited, consider customizing a purchased valance with fringe or other trims. When hanging the fabric valance, use a flat sash rod or a curtain wire so the valance lies flush against the wood trim. Install the mounting hardware just beyond the outer edges of the wood valance so it doesn't obstruct cabinet doors.

Decorate It

Your scalloped wood valance may seem to serve no purpose other than revealing the age of your kitchen. But if you use it as a display space, the valance becomes a functional element of your kitchen's decor. Take advantage of the valance's window location and hang crystals or sun-catchers from hooks installed on the scallops. If you're a gardener or home chef, hang bunches of dried rosemary, thyme and other herbs from the valance. By installing screw-in or adhesive hooks, you can use the valance to show off rotating displays of seasonal ornaments and garlands. When you hang items from the scalloped valance, arrange them so they won't get in the way when you're working at the sink.

How to Make a Wood Valance for Kitchen Cabinets

Step 1

Measure the distance between the cabinets where you plan to put the valance. This will tell you how long the valance needs to be. Cut a piece of 1- by 4-inch plywood to this length.

Step 2

Draw or trace a pattern on the plywood for the bottom edge of the valance; scallops, for example, are a common choice. Patterns and templates may be purchased from home improvement stores or downloaded online. You may also use drawing tools, such as a French curve, to create your own pattern.

Step 3

Clamp the wood down on a worktable. Cut the pattern out using a jigsaw and router. Work slowly and remove the clamps when you finish cutting out each piece so you can reposition the wood.

Step 4

Sand down all of the surfaces of the valance with medium-grade sandpaper, then sand again with fine-grade sandpaper.

Step 5

Cut out two 2- by 2-inch squares from any leftover plywood scraps; these will act as tabs that you can use to attach the valance to the cabinets.

Step 6

Glue one tab to each side of the back of the valance. The tabs should be flush with the edge of the valance so the entire unit can slide into the cavity between the cabinets. Slide the valance into the cavity to ensure it will fit. Secure the tabs to the valance with finishing nails.

Step 7

Apply paint or stain to the valance as desired. If you paint the valance, apply a primer first. Once the paint or stain is dry, seal the finish with polyurethane or lacquer.

Step 8

Install the valance between the cabinets. Work with a partner; one person should hold the valance in place while the other checks to see if it is level. Once the valance is in place, drill two inch wood screws through each tab to secure them to the cabinets.

Before and After: Kitchen Valance

Before and After: Kitchen Valance

Posted on June 15, by Teri • 1 Comment

If you have a window above your kitchen sink, you probably have an awkward, empty space above it.  Here is a great way to fill that void.

As in many kitchens, the cabinetry in this space is taller than the window, leaving a large space above the window trim.  In addition, kitchens are full of hard surfaces &#; floor, countertops, cabinetry &#; and limited opportunities for adding softness to the room.  A window treatment makes the perfect solution to both design dilemmas.

Kitchen valance before

Kitchen valance after

This kitchen has very high, vaulted ceilings.  The valance at the window softens the space, but also helps to tie the cabinetry together.  With an open space, the eye focuses on the void above the window, instead of the beautiful elements in the kitchen, including the custom backsplash and the custom valance.  The valance also makes the window look taller, since you cannot see the top of the glass.

vaulted kitchen valance before

Vaulted kitchen after

Tips to remember when installing a valance over your kitchen sink:  install it higher than the top of the window when possible, as it makes the window look taller and preserves your light and view.  Also, choose a fabric that includes colors from several other elements in the room; it will help to tie everything together.

Window treatments are a great finishing touch for any room; give them a try in your kitchen!

Valance kitchen sink

Do any of your new kitchens have wood valance over sink?

I have full overlay cabinets without a visible light rail, and small flush molding as a spacer for the ceiling. My sink window is a four foot wide, counter level garden window (i.e., pushed out for plants) with ceiling high cabinets up to the molding on either side. It would have looked kind of dumb with all this going on and nothing over it. Rather than a valance, I have a bridge cabinet. It is a foot high, flush to the same molding at ceiling height, and connects the two sides. There are a couple of knobs on the front, and a decorative heat register. Inside are a couple of lighting cans directed through the bottom at the sink, and space for spare lamps (or whatever one might want to hide).

Valances aren't done as much now mostly because a lot of people are putting in standard (rather than custom) sized cabinets, and either not taking them to the ceiling or soffit, or filling the gap with furniture moldings. That makes it hard to design in a valance that is appropriate and integral to the cabinetry design.

Cali Wendy's sink, in the linked thread, shows how you can make a valance look fresh in a classically styled kitchen. Notice the shape, like the white inset cabinets, references the past, but is also crisp and modern. Insetting it a few inches highlights and differentiates the window area more than flush would.

What is very out, until the '50's/'60's suburban kitchen becomes the next trend, is the scalloped or challet style valance. I also wouldn't do a straight board unless it were for a really rustic look. Something designed for the kitchen that's in proper proportion and style can be beautifyl.
